90. Swing Time (1936)

4/10

Look, as I started the movie I sent a prayer to some kind of god that there wouldn’t be anything racist in it. Things were looking good, I was almost ¾ of the way through... and then I literally exclaimed “Oh Jesus Christ” as a smiling Fred Astaire pulled out black face paint and proceeded to spend the next 10 minutes in blackface. Why!?!?! Obviously it was a different time… but this made me wary of enjoying any of the movie at all. Honestly, yes, Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers are a great dancing duo, but there were no real jaw-dropping numbers for me in this film.

The storyline was pretty weak, simply giving a reason for them to sing and dance every so often. The music was decent, and of course “The Way You Look Tonight” is a great song, but not so great when Astaire sings it… sorry. Honestly I think there are just better dancing movies that preferably have little to NO blackface, like Singin’ In The Rain or White Christmas. While I didn’t like the movie’s racist content, it wasn’t unenjoyable overall, as there were some fun dancing scenes and funny lines. But personally, that just wasn’t redeemable for me, and this might be controversial but I can think of several movies with better dancing, music, and plots without the racism, thanks.
