99. Toy Story (1995)

7/10 -

Everyone loves Toy Story! And why wouldn’t you? It is so nostalgic for childhood, both in the subject matter and the quality of the animation, which is crazy compared to what we see today. In the case of this film, I like that somewhat prehistoric animation technique as it feels like the past. To anyone who hasn't seen this film, no offense, but I believe Mr. Potato Head would call you an "uncultured swine," so you have some watching to do. This movie really does transport you, not only into the past as I’ve mentioned but into a world where toys are alive and everyone is okay with that!!! You suspend all disbelief for an hour and a half and just enjoy the story. I am surprised that an animated film is on this list, because even though I love Disney/Pixar animated films, I feel like they are often dismissed by pretentious film buffs. For those that do so, in the words of Buzz Lightyear himself, "'there seems to be no sign of intelligent life anywhere.'" I think that the story is relevant to all audiences and this sets it apart from many films that can be overlooked or called “kids’ movies.” The voice acting is incredibly important (and difficult) and shapes the story itself! Tom Hanks, Don Rickles, and Wallace Shawn!?! I’m in. Maybe not Tim Allen, but that’s a personal thing related to his politics. Anyway, this is a movie kids will love, but it is NOT A KIDS’ MOVIE!

There are many effective scenes in this film, all conveying different emotions: from sadness when Buzz finds out he really is just a toy when watching the Buzz Lightyear commercial, to legitimate fear when the creepy toys crawl out in Sid’s room, to frustration when Mr. Potato Head falsely accuses and outright dismisses Woody, to joy when the toys are all working together in the end. This film is magical in that you really go through a dozen emotions and all seven stages of grief (just kidding) in less than two hours.

I highly recommend this movie, even if you’ve seen it! It is childhood on a screen!
