Why Has No One Heard Of "Monk"?

One of my favorite shows is one that I feel like nobody knows about??? Or maybe just no one talks about it because it’s not current. It’s called Monk and it’s so good. Please let me know if you watch it or if you’ve heard of it!!

Anyway, it’s about this detective named Adrain Monk who is an expert at solving murders, but has some serious quirks and deeper traumas like OCD, which was caused by the murder of his wife. Monk is hilariously played by Tony Shalhoub (who I love) and somehow seems to bother everyone around him in the police station. It’s a silly show that I watched with my dad—who, by the way, reminds me of Monk a lot—when I was younger and then rewatched in the fall.

Every episode centers around a different case that Monk is assigned to solve. He works with the reluctant Captain Stottlemeyer, the dopey Lieutenant Randy, and his nurse, Sharona. I love all the characters in this show but especially Sharona, whose outfits are always on point and who is a great female character. Later in the show, Monk works with a new nurse, Natalie, who is also great; if anyone has watched it I’d love to discuss all the characters and the Monk-Natalie-Sharona dynamic.

The show ran from 2002-2009, and throughout the eight seasons Monk is also obsessed with solving the one murder that seems impossible to crack: his wife’s. I would say that you could basically watch the episodes in any order without really paying attention to the storyline, but there is this overarching story that pops up a few times. You can basically pick which episodes sound the most fun to you, but I would recommend them all if you have the time! Also, the theme songs (there are two) are both fun and catchy. And, I personally love Randy and Sharona.

The only problem with this show is that once you’ve watched it all, it’s hard to rewatch it. I watched all the episodes at least six months ago and yet, when I try to watch it again today, I remember the entire plotline of each episode (including the big reveal of who the killer is). Maybe I’ll just have to wait a few years until I forget everything, because I really want to watch them again.

Since each episode is centered around one story, except a few that don’t resolve immediately or are two-parters, I’d say that this show is really digestible and fun to watch without much of a commitment. If you want some recommendations for episodes, I’ve listed some of my personal favorites below!
